Get ready for .google, .london and .web! Today marks a milestone in the history of the Internet and Domainmonster.com HQ has been buzzing since ICANN, co-ordinators of the Internet naming system, unveiled the list of applied for New generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs).
Exciting times are ahead with one of the biggest shake-ups to the Domain Name System (DNS) and we've been at the hub since the start of ICANN's New gTLD Program. From January this year, for the $185,000 in application fees, brands and businesses have been applying for their own branded and generic TLDs. Today ICANN confirmed today that there were:
1,930 applications in total including 66 geographic domain name applications such as .london, .miami, .berlin, .melbourne and .tokyo.
230 contested domain names involving 751 applications including .app, .web, .cloud, .shop and .book.
Applicants included Google who have applied for 101 domain extensions including .google, .有图比 and .lol, Amazon who have made 76 applications including .book, .cloud, .mobile, .kindle, and Apple who have applied for .apple. Also announced were applications for .hotel, .music, movie and .baby! We could soon be typing search.google instead of google.com/search into our web browser address bars!
